Madrid, June 6, 2025 — Indra Group, one of Europe’s foremost defence, aerospace, and digital transformation companies, announced today a major advance in the deployment of quantum-resilient communication technologies to safeguard European sovereignty across military, civil, and space domains. The company’s initiative, outlined in a press release from Madrid, highlights a comprehensive strategy to integrate quantum-secure systems into Europe’s critical infrastructure and secure communications landscape in response to growing cybersecurity threats and the anticipated impact of quantum computing.
Central to this effort is the integration of its Space subsidiary in Portugal into Indra’s broader engineering and systems capabilities, reinforcing its position at the forefront of Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) technology development. QKD enables tamper-proof communication by facilitating secure key exchanges through quantum channels, a critical requirement for the next generation of defence and secure infrastructure networks. This work is anchored in the DISCRETION project, a €6 million initiative funded by the European Defence Industrial Development Programme (EDIDP), which recently demonstrated a fully operational quantum-secure communication system for military use. The demonstration, held in Brussels, integrated QKD with Software-Defined Networking (SDN) to deliver encrypted messaging, cyber resilience, and operational flexibility, involving collaboration with institutions from Portugal, Spain, Austria, and Italy.
In parallel, Indra’s technologies were validated during the NATO-led REPMUS exercise series, where it successfully demonstrated quantum-encrypted messaging, real-time key management, and network resilience in a multi-node configuration. These capabilities are critical to NATO’s future secure communications architecture, and Indra’s leadership is further underscored by its role as chair of NATO’s working group on military use cases for QKD.
Indra is also equipping the European Commission’s cyber risk management centre with its proprietary COMSec communication system, engineered to withstand threats from future quantum computing capabilities. Through the PQReact project, the company is facilitating the transition of critical infrastructure to post-quantum cryptography, ensuring continuity and integrity of operations in quantum-vulnerable environments.
At the European level, Indra plays a leading role in the European Quantum Communications Infrastructure (EuroQCI) programme. It coordinates the Portuguese Quantum Communications Infrastructure (PTQCI) and contributes to the Spanish segment, EuroQCI Spain, by integrating its quantum-adapted key management system (KMS). These efforts contribute directly to the creation of a sovereign, pan-European, quantum-secure communications framework.
In the space sector, Indra offers end-to-end capabilities for quantum communication systems operating in both Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and Geostationary Orbit (GEO), covering system architecture, optical terminal development, quantum key exchange protocols, and ground-segment integration. Through the creation of Indra Space, the company now covers the full value chain of space missions, from initial design and satellite production to deployment and mission operations, establishing itself as one of Europe’s most capable and strategically positioned space technology providers.
This unified approach to advanced communications, quantum innovation, and orbital infrastructure equips Indra to deliver secure, sovereign, and scalable systems tailored to meet Europe’s evolving defence and cybersecurity requirements in the post-quantum landscape.
